Concertino
Brass Ensemble/Grade 4
This concertino was an opportunity to write in some unfamiliar idioms, while simultaneously showcasing the abilities of each section.
The first movement, "A silly march," is a petite march meant to be humorous and playful. The introduction is a theme that will return in the final movement. This movement draws inspiration from arabesque rhythms as well as the King of Marches himself, John Philip Sousa.
The second movement, "A blue adagio," is a breath of fresh air centering around a trumpet solo. This movement takes inspiration from many of my favorite composers of modern wind band repertoire and ends with a wonderfully energetic second half.
The third movement, "A funky maestoso," is where the low brass finally get set loose. Taking inspiration from funk rhythms and Respighi (what a duo), this closing movement is meant to be big, nasty, and in your face. Bonus points if you catch the 007 reference in there.
